PHASE II — PUT THE TWO SYSTEMS SIDE BY SIDE Same words don't necessarily mean the same thing. Progressive and traditional Christians can both talk about Jesus, Scripture, salvation, sin, justice, love, the gospel, and the Church while holding significantly different understandings of those terms. In Episode 2, we put progressive Christianity and traditional biblical Christianity side by side. We'll compare their approaches to Scripture, Jesus, the gospel, sin, salvation, human identity, sexuality and marriage, justice, the Church, heaven and hell, and the Great Commission. The goal isn't to pretend every disagreement is equally important. Christians can legitimately disagree about secondary matters. The question is what happens when the disagreements concern Christianity's foundational claims. Major Topics * What is Scripture? * Who is Jesus? * What is the gospel? * What is sin? * What do humans need salvation from? * What is salvation? * Where does human identity come from? * What determines Christian sexual morality? * What is marriage? * What does biblical justice mean? * What is the purpose of the Church? * Are heaven, hell, and judgment essential Christian doctrines? * What mission did Jesus actually give His Church? Central Questions Does Scripture ultimately correct us, or can we ultimately correct Scripture? How much Christian doctrine can be removed or redefined before we've created another religion using Christian vocabulary? PHASE I — PROGRESSIVE CHRISTIANITY IN ITS OWN WORDS Where Did Progressive Christianity Come From—and How Far Has It Spread? Episode Description Progressive Christianity didn't suddenly appear with today's debates over sexuality, gender, or politics. Its theological roots reach much further back. We trace the development of progressive Christianity through theological liberalism, historical-critical approaches to Scripture, the Social Gospel, Modernist Christianity, and later reinterpretations of traditional Christian doctrine. Then we let progressive Christianity speak for itself by examining the Eight Points of Progressive Christianity and influential voices including Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, John Shelby Spong, Brian McLaren, and Diana Butler Bass. Finally, we ask a much bigger question: How many Christians have adopted individual beliefs associated with progressive Christianity without ever calling themselves progressive Christians? We'll look at national polling concerning religious pluralism, sexuality, gender, abortion, Scripture, heaven, and hell to see how complicated the theological landscape inside American Christianity has become. Major Topics Origins of progressive Christianity. Theological liberalism. Historical-critical approaches. Social Gospel movement. Modernist Christianity. ProgressiveChristianity.org. The Eight Points of Progressive Christianity. Religious pluralism. Biblical authority. LGBTQ inclusion. Justice and liberation. Creation care. Major progressive-Christian theologians and writers. National polling among American Christians. Explicit progressive Christianity vs. partial progressive influence. Central Question How much progressive-Christian theology has entered ordinary American Christianity without Christians ever adopting the label “progressive Christian”? Episode 5 of America At 250: Section 13: America Became What the Founders Feared A Growing Claim America did not become Britain. In some ways, it became something worse: a centralized bureaucratic, ideological, therapeutic state. TRUE OR FALSE - Modern America has: The federal government has grown so large that thousands of unelected officials now make decisions that affect our everyday lives. Government agencies often create rules that carry the force of law, even though Congress never voted on them. Many schools are spending more time teaching cultural and political ideas than teaching students how to think critically and pursue truth. Courts are increasingly making decisions that redefine long-held beliefs about marriage, family, life, and even what it means to be male and female. People are feeling more pressure to use certain words or affirm certain beliefs—even if they disagree—or risk being labeled, punished, or losing opportunities. More people believe the government should solve social problems by taking more from some people to give to others, rather than emphasizing personal responsibility, charity, and local communities. We have begun dividing people more by race, gender, sexuality, and other identity groups than by our shared humanity and common citizenship. Strong marriages are declining, fewer children are growing up in stable two-parent homes, and the family—the foundation of society—is under increasing strain. Fewer Americans know what the Bible actually teaches, making it easier for culture to shape beliefs than Scripture. Even with more technology, entertainment, and convenience than ever before, people are reporting higher levels of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and a lack of purpose. Section 14: The Church’s Failure TRUE OR FALSE: Do not only blame politicians. The church helped create this vacuum. The church outsourced discipleship. Parents outsourced biblical formation. Pastors avoided controversial truths. Churches entertained people instead of equipping them. Christians learned worship choruses but not worldview. We preached heaven but not creation. We preached forgiveness but not repentance. We preached kindness but not courage. We preached personal faith but not public truth. When the church stopped forming disciples, the culture formed activists. Section 15: Hope — It Is Not Too Late A Truth Claim We Place Our Hope In America is not beyond hope because God is not dead, the gospel is still true, and the church still has a mission. Part 4: The America the Founders Feared America's greatest challenge may not come from outside her borders but from the ideas she chooses to embrace within them. In this concluding episode, we'll examine Islam's political and legal worldview, the rise of centralized government, declining biblical literacy, the breakdown of the family, and the Church's role in America's cultural drift. But this series does not end in despair. We'll finish by exploring the encouraging signs of renewed spiritual hunger among many young men and members of Generation Z, reminding viewers that every great awakening began with a faithful remnant. America's future is not determined by politics alone—it will be shaped by whether God's people once again become salt, light, and faithful witnesses in a nation searching for truth. Section 12 — Islam & American Values First acknowledge, Muslims are image-bearers and many are patriotic Americans. Critique ideas to show how it leads people to act. Traditional Islamic political theology conflicts with American principles of religious liberty, free speech, equality before law, and separation of religious and civil authority. Sharia historically extends beyond private religion into family, economic, civil, and criminal law. Christian contrast: Christ's kingdom advances through proclamation and conversion, not coercion or state power. Key: John 18:36; Matthew 28:18–20. Section 13 — What the Founders Feared Founders feared centralized power, corruption, dependency, government intrusion, and loss of virtue. Modern concerns: bureaucracy, centralized government, ideological education, compelled speech, redistribution, identity politics, weakening families, and declining biblical literacy. Big idea: Marxism, secularism, naturalism, progressivism, and the sexual revolution didn't change America overnight—generations of ideas went unchallenged. Section 14 — The Church's Failure Don't blame politicians alone. Churches outsourced discipleship, avoided difficult truths, and often entertained instead of equipped The Church fell behind in creating culture and instead assimilated to the culture. “When the church stopped forming disciples, the culture formed activists.” America doesn't merely need better candidates—it needs strong churches, biblical literacy, strong families, and courageous Christians. Key: Acts 2:42; Matthew 5:13–16; 1 Peter 3:15. Section 15 — Hope However, God isn't dead, the Gospel is still true, and the Church still has a mission. Rebuild families, churches, schools, communities, biblical literacy, courage, and evangelism. Encouraging signs exist among younger Americans, particularly young men, returning to church and taking faith seriously—not necessarily revival yet, but reason for hope. Politics can't save. Materialism can't satisfy. Christ remains King. Be salt. Be light. Be faithful. Final Thought America's ultimate hope isn't Washington, Wall Street, universities, courts, or elections. It's Christ—and revival has never required a majority. It begins with a faithful remnant. Part 3: The Voices of the Few and the Loud How does a relatively small group of people change the direction of an entire nation? This episode explores the power of ideas, institutions, language, propaganda, and repetition to reshape culture. We'll examine how worldview spreads through education, media, entertainment, and politics before it ever reaches the ballot box. Using the Democratic Socialists of America, Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Zohran Mamdani, and James Talarico as modern case studies, we'll analyze how certain ideas have moved from the political fringe into the mainstream—and how Christians should evaluate them through the lens of Scripture. Part 2: The Competing Worldviews Ideas shape cultures long before they shape governments. In this episode, we examine the competing worldviews that have challenged America's biblical foundation over the past century. We'll compare Christianity with secularism, naturalism, Marxism, socialism, and communism, exploring how each answers life's biggest questions about truth, justice, human nature, and the role of government. We'll also look at the devastating historical record of communist regimes through the testimony of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and others, asking why ideas that have repeatedly failed continue to attract new generations. Pastor, Put On Your Big Boy Pants Part 2. Soft Shepherds, Weak Sheep, and the War We Pretend We’re Not In In this episode of It Makes Sense, we’re going straight at one of the biggest problems in the modern Church: soft pulpits that create weak Christians. This is not a call for pastors to be loud, angry, harsh, or reckless. It is a call for pastors to be faithful. The Church does not need religious managers trying to keep everyone comfortable. The Church needs shepherds who feed, protect, correct, train, and prepare the people of God to stand in a culture that is actively discipling them away from Scripture. The main idea is simple: many Christians are weak because many pulpits are weak. When pastors soften the gospel, dodge hard truths, avoid cultural pressure, and trade conviction for crowd management, the Church becomes emotionally fragile, biblically shallow, and spiritually unprepared.
