Why Our Identity Isn’t Determined by Others or Our Past
We are holy—not because we’ve done anything impressive, but because God is holy. That truth alone reshapes how we see ourselves and how we respond to the world around us.
If you’ve said “yes” to Jesus—to His invitation to follow Him—then Scripture says you’ve been chosen, redeemed, and adopted as a child of God. You are now counted as righteous, without blemish, and fully accepted.
“He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before Him.” — Ephesians 1:4
But don’t get it twisted—this didn’t happen because of your effort, morality, or spiritual resumé. We didn’t work our way into God’s invitation. We didn’t earn our place at the table. In fact, the opposite is true.
Lost, Poor, and Sick—But Chosen
Jesus said He came to seek the lost, serve the poor, and heal the sick. These aren’t just social labels—they’re spiritual metaphors for the human condition.
We were lost because our relationship with God was broken, and we didn’t know the way back.
We were poor in spirit—not just weak but dead in our sin.
We were sick, poisoned by sin in every fiber of our being.
But Jesus is the antidote. He doesn’t just make us feel better—He brings us back to life. When we trust Him, our old self dies, and a new spirit is born within us.
“God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins.” — Colossians 2:13
Though we still struggle with sin, its penalty no longer defines us. Jesus paid it all—past, present, and future.
Our Identity Is Secure
So what does that mean for everyday life?
It means our holiness—our new identity—is not dictated by how others treat us. It doesn’t rise and fall with how our spouse speaks to us, how coworkers act, or how our past tries to follow us.
It doesn’t disappear when someone says, “You haven’t really changed.” It doesn’t get revoked when someone brings up your worst moment.
Let’s be real: our flesh wants to fight back. When we’re hurt, we want to hurt back. When we’re disrespected, we want to return the favor. But that’s not holiness—that’s human nature without the Holy Spirit.
You’re not holy because you made a string of good decisions. And you’re not unholy because someone else doesn’t believe in your transformation.
If our holiness was based on behavior, we’d need to be saved again every day. But God doesn’t operate like that.
“For by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” — Hebrews 10:14
Live Like It—Because It’s Already Yours
So how do we actually live holy if we couldn’t even get there in the first place?
That’s where the “Helper” comes in.
Jesus didn’t just save us and say, “Good luck.” He gave us the Holy Spirit—the One who empowers us to live the life we’re called to.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit... will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.” — John 14:26
The Spirit convicts, comforts, strengthens, and walks with us. You don’t have to fake holiness. You don’t have to force it. You have to surrender.
Let the Spirit do what your flesh never could.
And when you fall short—and you will—don’t go back to shame. Don’t give in to the lies. Don’t return fire when someone insults you.
Run back to grace.
Rest in this: your holiness is not a goal you’re chasing. It’s a gift you’ve already received.
So live like it.
Not to earn it.
But because it’s already yours.
