When You Don’t Agree with a Verse in the Bible

When Scripture confronts our opinions, the right response isn’t to argue—it’s to surrender.
When Scripture confronts our opinions, the right response isn’t to argue—it’s to surrender.

Let’s stop playing games. If you come across a verse in the Bible that you don’t agree with, here’s the answer: you’re wrong. Change your opinion.

God doesn’t need your approval. His Word isn’t waiting for your edits. You don’t get a vote.

Scripture Stands. You Don’t.

The Bible is God’s Word—all of it. Paul says it plainly: “All Scripture is breathed out by God…” (2 Timothy 3:16). That includes the parts you like, and the parts you don’t. The parts that comfort you, and the parts that cut you to the core.

When you elevate your opinion over Scripture, you’re telling God you know better. That is rebellion. That is pride. And pride is the oldest sin in the book—it’s what got Satan thrown out of heaven.

Disagreement Exposes the Real Issue

When you disagree with Scripture, the issue is never the text—it’s your heart. The Bible doesn’t need reinterpreted to suit the times. You need to repent to suit the truth.

Does this mean you won’t struggle with hard passages? No. But “struggling” is different than “rejecting.” Struggle leads to deeper faith and understanding. Rejection leads to apostasy.

What to Do Instead

  1. Repent of Pride – Admit you are not God, and stop acting like you are.

  2. Seek Understanding – Dig into the context. Often what offends us is what we haven’t taken the time to grasp.

  3. Submit, Even When It Hurts – Obedience is not about comfort. It’s about trust.

  4. Let Scripture Judge You – Not the other way around.

A Line in the Sand

We live in an age where Christians think they can keep their faith while cutting out the verses they don’t like. That is not Christianity. That’s idolatry. A god who agrees with you at every point is not the God of the Bible—it’s just a mirror.

Jesus didn’t say, “If you love me, agree with the parts of my Word that feel right to you.” He said, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15).

So when you come to a verse you don’t agree with, you’ve reached a crossroads: Will you bow the knee to God, or will you demand God bow the knee to you?

Only one of those ends well.
